For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Frankincense (Boswellia spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine and spiritual rituals, particularly in regions of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Its resin has been burned as incense in religious ceremonies to promote feelings of tranquility and to reduce stress and anxiety. Traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems have also utilized frankincense for its purported calming and mood-stabilizing effects. However, scientific validation for its use specifically in treating or supporting "emotional sensitivity" is limited.
Some preliminary studies suggest that compounds in frankincense, such as incensole acetate, may have anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects in animal models, potentially by modulating certain brain signaling pathways. A few small-scale human studies and anecdotal reports indicate that inhalation of frankincense essential oil may reduce subjective feelings of stress or anxiety, but these studies are not robust, and the evidence is far from conclusive. Overall, the use of frankincense for emotional sensitivity is primarily justified by traditional and historical use rather than strong scientific evidence.
