Evidence supporting the use of: Litsea
For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Litsea cubeba, commonly known as Litsea or May Chang, is primarily used in traditional practices, especially within aromatherapy and some Eastern herbal traditions, to support emotional well-being and sensitivity. There is limited scientific research directly investigating Litsea's effects on emotional sensitivity or mood disorders. Historically, the essential oil extracted from Litsea’s fruit or leaves has been valued for its uplifting, lemon-like aroma, which is believed in folklore and aromatherapy to help relieve stress, anxiety, and emotional turmoil. Practitioners often blend Litsea oil with other calming essential oils, suggesting its use in creating a soothing environment.
However, only a handful of small studies and anecdotal reports exist that investigate Litsea’s psychological effects; these are often not rigorous or specific to emotional sensitivity as a clinical parameter. Some constituents of Litsea oil, such as citral and limonene, are found in other citrus oils that have shown mild anxiolytic effects in animal models and small human trials, but direct evidence for Litsea is lacking. Therefore, while its use is grounded in tradition and supported anecdotally, robust scientific validation for its efficacy in treating or supporting emotional sensitivity is minimal at this time.
