Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Provence Rose (Rosa centifolia) has a long history of use in traditional herbalism for emotional well-being and sensitivity. In systems such as Western herbalism, rose preparations—including teas, tinctures, and essential oils—are often recommended for calming the nerves, easing heartache, and supporting emotional balance. Historical herbalists like Nicholas Culpeper and Maud Grieve referenced rose for soothing the mind and ‘comforting the spirit.’ In contemporary aromatherapy, rose oil is commonly used for its reputed calming and uplifting properties, especially in the context of sadness, grief, or heightened emotional states.

However, scientific studies specifically examining Provence Rose (Rosa centifolia) for "emotional sensitivity" are extremely limited. Some small studies and reviews on rose essential oils (more commonly Rosa damascena) suggest anxiolytic and mood-improving effects, possibly due to volatile compounds like citronellol and geraniol. These findings are preliminary and not specific to Provence Rose, nor to the broader concept of “emotional sensitivity.” Thus, while the tradition of using rose for emotional support is well-established, robust scientific validation—especially for Provence Rose and the specific condition of emotional sensitivity—is lacking.
