Evidence supporting the use of: Sensitive Plant
For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine in South and Southeast Asia. It has been used for a range of conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, and emotional disturbances—symptoms that can overlap with what might be termed “emotional sensitivity.” Traditional practitioners often attribute calming or sedative properties to the plant, using it in preparations to help soothe emotional distress or agitation. However, these uses are based mostly on anecdotal evidence and ethnobotanical reports rather than controlled clinical studies. There is some preclinical research indicating that extracts of Mimosa pudica may have central nervous system depressant effects in animal models, which might theoretically explain its traditional use for calming the mind. Despite this, there is a lack of high-quality human studies specifically examining its efficacy for emotional sensitivity. Therefore, while its use for emotional sensitivity is primarily justified by tradition, scientific validation is limited and the overall strength of evidence is low.
