Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B6, particularly in its active form pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), has some scientific rationale for use in supporting mood and emotional regulation, though direct evidence for its effect on "emotional sensitivity" is limited and not robust. Vitamin B6 plays a crucial role as a coenzyme in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are involved in mood regulation and emotional responses. Deficiencies in B6 have been associated with symptoms like irritability, depression, and confusion in some studies. Randomized controlled trials have shown some benefit of B6 supplementation in premenstrual syndrome (PMS)-related mood symptoms, including irritability and mood swings, which loosely relate to emotional sensitivity. However, evidence for its effect on emotional sensitivity outside of PMS or clinical deficiency states is sparse. A 2022 double-blind trial suggested high-dose B6 supplementation could reduce anxiety, possibly by increasing GABAergic inhibition, but the effect size was small and the outcome only indirectly related to emotional sensitivity. Overall, while there is a biological basis and some indirect clinical evidence, the direct support for Vitamin B6 supplementation in treating emotional sensitivity per se is modest, and more targeted research is needed.
