Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine phosphate) has some scientific basis for supporting emotional health, but the evidence is limited and not robust. Vitamin B6 is an essential cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which are involved in mood regulation and emotional balance. Some small clinical studies and observational research suggest that B6 supplementation may reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including mood swings and irritability, which can be viewed as forms of emotional sensitivity. For example, a meta-analysis published in 1999 (British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) found modest benefit of vitamin B6 for PMS-related emotional symptoms, though study quality was variable.

Outside of PMS, evidence for B6 directly improving "emotional sensitivity" in the general population is sparse. Severe B6 deficiency is associated with neurological symptoms, including irritability and depression, but such deficiencies are rare in healthy individuals. There is insufficient evidence to support high-dose supplementation for emotional regulation in people with normal B6 status. Most clinical guidelines focus on B6 supplementation only for those with documented deficiency or specific at-risk groups. In summary, there is some scientific support for B6 in emotional health under specific conditions (like PMS or deficiency), but the overall quality and amount of evidence for its use in treating general emotional sensitivity is low.
