Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been investigated for its role in supporting emotional health, including symptoms related to emotional sensitivity such as mood swings, irritability, and premenstrual emotional symptoms. Scientifically, Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, which are critical for mood regulation. Some clinical studies have shown that B6 supplementation may reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including mood-related symptoms, and may modestly support emotional well-being in certain populations, such as individuals with B6 deficiency or those with PMS.

However, the evidence is limited and often of low to moderate quality. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest a small but statistically significant effect of B6 in reducing PMS symptoms, but evidence for its benefit in the general population or specifically for "emotional sensitivity" outside of PMS is lacking. There is no strong evidence supporting its use for broader mood disorders such as depression or anxiety in otherwise healthy individuals. In summary, Vitamin B6 has some scientific support for improving emotional symptoms related to PMS, but the evidence is not robust for its use in general emotional sensitivity.
