Evidence supporting the use of: Canadian Goldenrod
For the health condition: Emphysema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples in North America and later in European herbal practices. It has been used primarily as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and for treating urinary tract issues. Some traditional sources also mention its use for respiratory ailments, but its application specifically for emphysema is very limited and not well-documented. Emphysema is a chronic lung condition, often associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and there is little to no robust traditional or scientific documentation directly supporting the use of Canadian Goldenrod for this specific condition. While the herb contains saponins and flavonoids that may have general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, available studies focus on urinary and mild inflammatory conditions, not emphysema. No clinical trials or substantial pharmacological evidence exist to justify its effectiveness in emphysema treatment. As such, any use for this condition is based largely on extrapolated traditional uses for respiratory complaints, with minimal evidence or specificity to emphysema.
