Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum, formerly Ledum groenlandicum) has a long history of use among Indigenous peoples of North America, primarily for respiratory and digestive complaints. Its use for emphysema specifically is based on traditional herbal medicine rather than strong scientific evidence. Traditional uses include teas made from the leaves to treat coughs, colds, chest ailments, and general respiratory discomfort, which could overlap with symptoms experienced in emphysema. However, there are no well-documented clinical trials or rigorous scientific studies directly assessing the efficacy of Labrador Tea for emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). The plant contains volatile oils, tannins, and other compounds thought to have mild anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, which might explain its traditional application for respiratory symptoms. Nevertheless, scientific validation is lacking, and the existing evidence is largely anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical records. Furthermore, Labrador Tea can be toxic if consumed in high quantities, and its safety profile is not well established. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, it cannot be recommended as a proven or primary treatment for emphysema.
