Evidence supporting the use of: Vitex negundo
For the health condition: Emphysema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Unani, for the management of respiratory ailments, including symptoms that may overlap with emphysema (such as chronic cough, bronchitis, and asthma). The leaves and extracts are said to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and bronchodilatory properties, which could theoretically offer some relief to individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. However, the direct application of Vitex negundo specifically to emphysema is not well-documented in traditional texts—its use is more generally directed towards respiratory complaints and not emphysema per se, as that distinction is a modern clinical diagnosis. Scientific research on Vitex negundo related to emphysema is extremely limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that Vitex negundo has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and animal studies have indicated potential protective effects against lung injury or general respiratory inflammation. However, there are no robust clinical trials, nor is there strong mechanistic evidence directly linking Vitex negundo to the treatment or mitigation of emphysema in humans. Thus, its use for emphysema is supported mainly by traditional usage for respiratory ailments, with only modest indirect scientific evidence relating to its general anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects.
