Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cohosh, specifically Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa, formerly Cimicifuga racemosa), has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for managing a variety of women’s health issues such as menstrual discomfort and menopausal symptoms. Its use for endometriosis is an extension of these broader applications, rooted primarily in tradition rather than strong scientific evidence. Traditional herbalists have used Black Cohosh to attempt to modulate hormonal activity and reduce pain associated with menstruation, which overlaps with some symptoms of endometriosis. However, there is a lack of robust clinical studies directly investigating Black Cohosh for the treatment or management of endometriosis. Most scientific research on Black Cohosh has focused on menopausal symptoms rather than gynecological conditions like endometriosis. While some animal and in vitro studies hint at anti-inflammatory or hormone-modulating properties, these findings are not specific to endometriosis and have not been validated in human trials for this condition. As such, the use of Black Cohosh for endometriosis remains primarily supported by traditional use rather than scientific validation, and the evidence base is weak (rated 1/5).
