Alpha glyceryl, more precisely known as Alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha-GPC), is a choline-containing supplement often marketed for cognitive enhancement, but it has also been investigated for its potential to support physical endurance. The scientific evidence supporting Alpha-GPC for endurance is limited but growing. A few small, controlled studies have examined its effects on physical performance. Notably, a 2008 study by Ziegenfuss et al. found that Alpha-GPC supplementation increased growth hormone secretion and enhanced peak bench press force in healthy young men, suggesting a possible ergogenic effect. Another study (Bellar et al., 2015) indicated improvements in vertical jump power after Alpha-GPC supplementation, which can be tangential to endurance, but does not directly measure sustained aerobic capacity or endurance performance. The proposed mechanism is that Alpha-GPC increases acetylcholine availability, which may enhance neuromuscular function during exercise. However, large-scale, long-term studies directly linking Alpha-GPC with significant improvements in endurance (such as time-to-exhaustion, VO2 max, or distance events) are lacking. Thus, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting Alpha-GPC could potentially support aspects of physical performance, its direct effect on endurance, especially in the context of aerobic exercise, remains inconclusive. The current evidence base is modest, and further research is needed before Alpha-GPC can be recommended with confidence for improving endurance.
