Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as eleuthero, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Russia and China, as an adaptogen to help the body resist physical, environmental, and emotional stressors. Its use for enhancing endurance can be traced back to traditional practices, where it was commonly consumed by laborers, athletes, and soldiers to reduce fatigue and increase stamina. In the 20th century, Russian researchers popularized its use among athletes and cosmonauts, believing it could improve physical performance and support recovery.

Scientific research on Siberian ginseng’s effects on endurance has produced mixed results. Some small clinical studies and animal experiments have suggested it may enhance physical performance and reduce fatigue, presumably by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and supporting stress adaptation. However, systematic reviews and larger, well-controlled clinical trials have often failed to show statistically significant or consistent improvements in endurance measures compared to placebo. As a result, while there is a strong traditional basis for its use, and some moderate scientific evidence, its efficacy for improving endurance is not robustly established by modern standards. The overall quality and consistency of the evidence rate it as moderate (3/5).
