Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hydrolyzed protein is a form of protein that has been broken down into smaller peptides and amino acids, making it easier and quicker to absorb compared to intact proteins. Its use to support endurance, particularly in athletic or prolonged exercise contexts, has some scientific basis but is not robustly established. Some research suggests that hydrolyzed protein, consumed either before, during, or after endurance exercise, may assist with quicker amino acid delivery, muscle protein synthesis, and recovery, potentially helping to maintain or improve endurance performance. For example, studies indicate that hydrolyzed proteins can rapidly increase plasma amino acid levels, which may help reduce muscle breakdown and support repair during and after extended physical activity. However, direct evidence that hydrolyzed protein supplementation significantly enhances endurance performance (as opposed to simply supporting recovery or muscle maintenance) is limited and not consistently superior to other high-quality intact proteins like whey. The theoretical basis is more about improved absorption and reduced gastrointestinal discomfort, which could benefit endurance athletes, but clinical trials specifically linking hydrolyzed protein intake to marked improvements in endurance are relatively few and of modest quality. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, the overall support is moderate at best.
