Evidence supporting the use of: Ajuga turkestanica
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ajuga turkestanica, a plant native to Central Asia, has been traditionally used in folk medicine to promote strength, stamina, and recovery, particularly among athletes and those experiencing fatigue or low energy. Its use for energy support is largely rooted in traditional practices, especially in Uzbekistan and neighboring regions. The plant contains phytoecdysteroids, particularly turkesterone, which are believed to have adaptogenic properties—meaning they may help the body adapt to physical or mental stress. However, the modern scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that ecdysteroids may influence protein synthesis and muscle performance, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. No well-controlled studies directly demonstrate that Ajuga turkestanica supplementation improves energy levels or reduces fatigue in humans. Thus, while the traditional use for supporting energy is well-documented, scientific validation is insufficient at this time, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
