Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Arginine creatine is a combination of the amino acid arginine and the compound creatine, both of which have been individually studied for their roles in supporting energy metabolism and physical performance. Creatine is well-known for its ability to increase phosphocreatine stores in muscle, thereby facilitating rapid regeneration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy carrier in cells. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that creatine supplementation can improve high-intensity exercise performance, muscle strength, and power output, especially in individuals experiencing physical fatigue or increased energy demands.

Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule involved in vasodilation and blood flow. Some studies suggest that arginine supplementation may enhance exercise performance by improving blood flow to muscles, though evidence is less robust and more variable compared to creatine.

When used in combination (arginine creatine), the theoretical benefit is to synergistically enhance both ATP regeneration (via creatine) and nutrient delivery (via arginine-induced vasodilation). However, direct scientific evidence for the combination is limited, with most research focusing on the individual components. Overall, creatine has strong scientific support for improving energy availability during intense activities, while arginine’s contribution is less certain. Thus, the use of arginine creatine to support or treat lack of energy is scientifically plausible but primarily established through the creatine component, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
