Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arginine-L-malate is a compound formed from the amino acid L-arginine and malic acid. Its use for supporting energy is based on some scientific rationale, though robust clinical data are lacking. L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, which has roles in vasodilation and blood flow, potentially improving nutrient and oxygen delivery to muscles during exercise. Malate, a key intermediate in the citric acid (Krebs) cycle, is directly involved in cellular energy production.

Some small studies and animal research suggest that arginine and malate, either alone or in combination (as in arginine malate or arginine aspartate), may reduce feelings of fatigue, especially in the context of exercise. A few human studies (mostly on arginine aspartate) have reported modest improvements in perceived fatigue and endurance, but evidence is limited and often not specific to the arginine-L-malate combination. Moreover, the studies frequently have small sample sizes and methodological limitations.

Overall, while theoretical and some preliminary experimental evidence exists to support the use of arginine-L-malate for energy and fatigue, it is not strong. The evidence does not yet reach the level of large, well-controlled clinical trials. Thus, the rating is 2/5, reflecting limited scientific support and the need for more research.
