Its role in energy metabolism has led to its inclusion in some dietary supplements marketed to combat fatigue or low energy. There is some scientific rationale for this use, as aspartic acid participates in the malate-aspartate shuttle, which helps transport reducing equivalents (NADH) into the mitochondria for ATP production. Animal studies and in vitro experiments have demonstrated that aspartic acid supplementation can influence energy metabolism, and a few small human studies (primarily with the salt form, D-aspartic acid) have explored its effects on fatigue and physical performance.

However, the clinical evidence supporting aspartic acid supplementation for improving energy levels in humans is limited and not robust.
