Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)—comprising leucine, isoleucine, and valine—are sometimes used to address low energy, especially in the context of sports and exercise. There is some scientific rationale for this use: BCAAs are metabolized primarily in skeletal muscle, unlike most amino acids, and are involved in muscle protein synthesis and energy production during prolonged physical activity. Some studies suggest BCAA supplementation may help reduce exercise-induced fatigue, possibly by altering levels of tryptophan and serotonin in the brain, which are linked to perceptions of tiredness.

However, the evidence for BCAAs directly combating general energy deficiency (outside of the athletic context) is limited. Clinical trials in athletes show modest reductions in perceived exertion and mental fatigue during endurance events, but benefits are inconsistent and often marginal. There is little evidence supporting their use for chronic fatigue, medical conditions causing low energy, or in non-athletic populations. Most reviews conclude that while BCAAs may play a small role in reducing exercise-related fatigue, they are not a direct treatment for energy deficit per se.

In summary, BCAAs have a scientific basis for limited use in reducing exercise-induced fatigue, but evidence is weak and does not support their use for general energy enhancement in the broader population.
