Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Coenzyme A (CoA) is an essential cofactor involved in numerous biochemical pathways, particularly those related to energy metabolism, such as the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and the beta-oxidation of fatty acids. Its role in converting carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into ATP—the body’s primary energy currency—is well-documented in biochemistry. However, while the physiological importance of CoA is scientifically established, evidence supporting the use of supplemental Coenzyme A to treat or improve symptoms of low energy in healthy individuals is limited.

Most clinical research on energy supplementation focuses on related compounds like acetyl-L-carnitine or B vitamins (which are involved in CoA synthesis via pantothenic acid), rather than direct CoA supplementation. There are very few clinical trials assessing the efficacy of CoA supplements for fatigue or energy enhancement, and those that exist are generally small or methodologically weak. The body typically synthesizes sufficient CoA from dietary pantothenic acid; true deficiency is rare and usually associated with severe malnutrition.

In summary, while the biochemical rationale for CoA’s involvement in energy production is clear, there is insufficient clinical evidence to support the use of CoA supplements for treating lack of energy in otherwise healthy individuals. The evidence rating is therefore low, with a score of 2, reflecting a strong theoretical basis but limited direct clinical validation.
