Evidence supporting the use of: Cordyceps
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Cordyceps, a genus of parasitic fungi, has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine where it has been used to combat fatigue and enhance physical performance. In recent years, modern research has explored its potential to support energy and reduce tiredness. Several small-scale human studies and animal models suggest that Cordyceps may improve exercise performance by increasing the body’s production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells. For example, studies have found that supplementation with Cordyceps extract can increase VO2 max (a measure of aerobic capacity) and delay fatigue in older adults and athletes.
The active compounds believed responsible include cordycepin and polysaccharides, which may enhance oxygen utilization and have antioxidant effects. However, while these preliminary findings are promising, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate: many studies are small, short in duration, or use proprietary extracts that may not be widely available. Some research has failed to show a significant benefit, and more large, well-controlled trials are needed to confirm Cordyceps’ effects on energy and fatigue in the general population.
In summary, there is both traditional use and emerging scientific evidence to justify Cordyceps' use for supporting energy, but the strength of the scientific evidence should be considered moderate (3/5), indicating potential benefit but not definitive proof.
