For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as Siberian ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Russia, China, and other parts of Asia. It is considered an "adaptogen," a type of herb thought to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors and improve overall energy and stamina. Traditional practitioners have used eleuthero to combat fatigue, enhance physical performance, and improve resilience during periods of stress or illness. The root was especially popular in Soviet-era Russia, where it was given to athletes, cosmonauts, and military personnel to enhance endurance and reduce fatigue. Scientific evidence for eleuthero's effectiveness in supporting energy is moderate but not robust. Some small-scale clinical trials and animal studies suggest that eleuthero may reduce feelings of fatigue and improve physical performance, possibly by influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and modulating stress responses. However, results are mixed, with some studies showing modest benefits and others failing to demonstrate significant effects. The quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological weaknesses. Major health authorities generally conclude that more high-quality research is needed to confirm these effects. Overall, the use of eleuthero for boosting energy is primarily justified by traditional use, with some supporting but inconclusive scientific evidence.
