Evidence supporting the use of: Eurycoma Longifolia
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Eurycoma longifolia, commonly known as tongkat ali, has been traditionally used in Southeast Asia as a general tonic and for enhancing vitality. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to examine its effects on energy and fatigue. Several small randomized controlled trials and animal studies suggest that supplementation with Eurycoma longifolia extract may help reduce fatigue and improve subjective feelings of energy, possibly by modulating stress hormones such as cortisol and supporting testosterone levels. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research reported that subjects taking Eurycoma longifolia extract experienced improvements in mood and reduced tension, anger, and confusion—indirectly suggesting enhanced energy and well-being. Some studies in physically active populations have indicated modest improvements in endurance and reduced fatigue, though these findings are not universally consistent.
Despite positive indications, the body of evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and variability in extract standardization. There are relatively few large-scale, high-quality clinical trials directly measuring objective markers of energy or fatigue reduction. Therefore, while there is preliminary scientific support, the overall evidence remains modest (rated 2/5). Continued research is necessary to clarify the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of Eurycoma longifolia for improving energy and treating fatigue.
