Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), despite its name, is not a true ginseng but has been used traditionally in Russia and China as an adaptogen to combat fatigue and enhance energy and stamina. Its use for increasing energy and reducing symptoms of tiredness is well-documented in traditional medicine, particularly in Russian herbalism, where it was given to workers, athletes, and cosmonauts to improve physical and mental performance. The plant’s root contains eleutherosides, which are believed to be the active compounds responsible for its reputed adaptogenic effects.
Scientific research on Siberian ginseng's effects on energy is limited and generally of low quality. Some small studies from the 1980s and 1990s suggested mild benefits in reducing fatigue and improving endurance, but results are inconsistent and sample sizes are often too small for robust conclusions. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses typically rate the evidence as weak or insufficient to confirm efficacy for energy enhancement in healthy individuals. As a result, while Siberian ginseng continues to be promoted for energy based on traditional use, scientific validation remains limited.
