Evidence supporting the use of: Nettle
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for supporting overall vitality and addressing feelings of low energy or fatigue. Traditionally, nettle has been used as a "tonic" herb, believed to strengthen and nourish the body, particularly due to its rich content of vitamins (such as A, C, and K), minerals (notably iron and magnesium), and other phytonutrients. In various folkloric and herbal systems, nettle tea or extracts were recommended for people recovering from illness, anemia, or general debility, based on the assumption that its nutrient density could help restore strength and energy.
However, scientific evidence specifically linking nettle to improvements in energy levels or fatigue is limited. While nettle does contain iron—a mineral important for preventing iron-deficiency anemia, a known cause of fatigue—clinical studies directly assessing its efficacy for boosting energy in non-anemic individuals are lacking. Some herbalists suggest that nettle's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties might contribute indirectly to better overall well-being, but these effects have not been robustly proven to translate to increased energy in scientific trials. Thus, while its use for energy support is justified by tradition and plausible due to its nutrient content, strong scientific validation is currently lacking.
