Orchis latifolia, commonly known as the broad-leaved marsh orchid, has a history of traditional use in various medical systems, especially in parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The tubers of this plant are a source of 'salep,' a starchy, mucilaginous substance used in traditional medicine and cuisine. In traditional Unani and Ayurvedic medicine, Orchis latifolia and related orchids have been considered to have restorative properties, and their preparations have been used as tonics to combat general debility, fatigue, and lack of energy. These uses are largely attributed to the nourishing, demulcent, and mildly aphrodisiac qualities attributed to salep. Despite these traditional claims, there is little to no robust scientific evidence directly linking Orchis latifolia to increased energy or improved stamina in humans.
