Ornithine l-aspartic acid (LOLA) is primarily used in clinical settings to reduce elevated ammonia levels, particularly in patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Its mechanism involves enhancing the urea cycle and glutamine synthesis, thereby supporting ammonia detoxification in the liver and muscle tissues. Regarding its use for improving energy or treating fatigue, the scientific support is limited and indirect. Some small studies and biochemical rationale suggest that by reducing ammonia, LOLA may help alleviate fatigue, especially in individuals with liver dysfunction where hyperammonemia contributes to tiredness and cognitive impairment. For example, a few clinical trials have reported subjective improvements in fatigue among patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis treated with LOLA, likely due to improved nitrogen metabolism rather than a direct energizing effect.

However, in healthy individuals or those experiencing fatigue not related to liver dysfunction or ammonia metabolism disorders, there is scant evidence supporting LOLA’s use for increasing energy. Major reviews and clinical guidelines do not recommend ornithine l-aspartic acid as a general energy booster. Thus, while scientific validation exists for fatigue associated with liver conditions and hyperammonemia, its application for general lack of energy is not robustly supported by current evidence.
