Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polygonatum (commonly known as Solomon’s Seal) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as an herb believed to "tonify Qi" (energy), moisten dryness, and support the lungs and kidneys. In TCM, a lack of energy or feelings of fatigue are often attributed to Qi deficiency, and Polygonatum species (notably Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum) are included in herbal formulas intended to revitalize and support overall vitality. The earliest references to Polygonatum's use for such purposes appear in classical Chinese materia medica texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," where it is described as a superior herb for nourishing "essence" and promoting longevity.

Modern pharmacological studies have identified some bioactive compounds in Polygonatum, such as polysaccharides and saponins, that exhibit antioxidant and adaptogenic properties in vitro and in animal models. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its effects on energy, fatigue, or related outcomes are lacking. Most evidence remains preclinical, and traditional usage is the primary basis for its current reputation as an energy-supportive herb. Therefore, while its use for supporting energy is well-established in traditional practice, scientific validation is limited at this time.
