Evidence supporting the use of: Polysaccharide
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Polysaccharides, particularly those derived from medicinal mushrooms (such as beta-glucans from Ganoderma lucidum or Cordyceps sinensis), seaweeds, and certain plants, have been studied for their potential role in supporting energy metabolism and combating fatigue. Scientific studies, primarily in animal models and small human trials, suggest that these polysaccharides may enhance physical endurance and reduce fatigue, possibly by modulating the immune system, improving mitochondrial function, and enhancing glycogen storage in muscles and the liver. For example, Cordyceps polysaccharides have been shown in several studies to improve exercise performance and delay fatigue, likely due to better oxygen utilization and antioxidant effects. However, while these findings are promising, the majority of evidence comes from preclinical studies or small-scale human trials; large, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking. Thus, the evidence supporting their use for treating or supporting energy (lack of) is moderate but not conclusive. Traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, have long used polysaccharide-rich mushrooms and herbs for "qi" and vitality, but scientific validation is still emerging. Overall, polysaccharides may support energy through multiple biological pathways, but more robust clinical research is needed to confirm efficacy in humans.
