Evidence supporting the use of: Pyrroloquinoline disodium salt
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is a compound found in certain foods and is also available as a dietary supplement. Its use for supporting energy, particularly in cases of fatigue or low energy, is primarily based on its role in mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of the cell, generating ATP, the main energy currency in the body. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that PQQ can stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis (the creation of new mitochondria) and improve mitochondrial efficiency. For example, animal studies have shown that PQQ supplementation can enhance energy metabolism and reduce markers of oxidative stress, which may theoretically contribute to improved energy levels.
Human clinical evidence is limited but growing. Small-scale clinical trials have found that PQQ supplementation (typically 20 mg/day for 8-12 weeks) can improve subjective feelings of fatigue and vigor in healthy adults and those with mild fatigue. These studies also report improvements in sleep and mood, which may indirectly influence perceptions of energy. However, the sample sizes are small, and most studies are short in duration. There is also a lack of robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and early evidence suggesting PQQ may support energy by enhancing mitochondrial function, the strength of clinical evidence remains moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
