Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a redox cofactor and nutrient that has been studied for its potential role in promoting cellular energy production. The rationale for using PQQ to support energy levels is primarily based on its involvement in mitochondrial biogenesis—the process by which new mitochondria are formed within cells. Mitochondria are the cellular organelles responsible for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of the cell. Some animal studies and a limited number of small human trials suggest that PQQ supplementation may enhance mitochondrial function and increase markers of energy metabolism. For example, a 2012 randomized controlled trial published in "Functional Foods in Health and Disease" found that PQQ supplementation improved subjective measures of fatigue and vigor in healthy adults over an 8-week period. However, the evidence base is still limited, with most studies being small and short-term, and there is a lack of large-scale, long-term clinical trials confirming these effects. While mechanistic studies support the plausibility of PQQ’s benefits for mitochondrial function and energy metabolism, more robust human research is needed to firmly establish its efficacy for treating or preventing fatigue or low energy.
