Evidence supporting the use of: Siler root
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Siler root (Fang Feng, Saposhnikovia divaricata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb primarily valued for its use in treating conditions such as colds, fevers, rheumatism, and wind-dampness syndromes. Its use for supporting or treating lack of energy (fatigue) is not a principal indication in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) texts, but it may be included in some formulas to help dispel "wind" and "dampness," which, according to TCM theory, can contribute to generalized malaise or weakness. The rationale in TCM is not directly about boosting energy (qi) but about removing pathogenic factors that may impede the free flow of qi, thereby indirectly supporting vitality. There is scant scientific research directly supporting the use of siler root for fatigue or low energy. Most modern studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory properties rather than direct effects on energy metabolism or fatigue. Therefore, while some traditional practices may include siler root in formulas designed to support general health, the evidence for its use specifically to treat or support energy (lack of) is weak, and there is little to no robust clinical evidence to validate this use. Its application for this purpose is best characterized as based on tradition, with limited and indirect support.
