Evidence supporting the use of: Somatropin
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Somatropin is a synthetic form of human growth hormone (hGH) and is approved for medical use in treating growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in both children and adults. One of the symptoms of adult GHD is fatigue and reduced energy levels. Clinical studies show that somatropin replacement can improve overall quality of life, with some patients reporting increased vitality, improved mood, and decreased fatigue compared to placebo. However, these effects are most consistently observed in individuals with objectively diagnosed growth hormone deficiency, not in the general population or athletes without GHD.
There is limited evidence supporting the use of somatropin for enhancing energy in people without GHD. Most guidelines and regulatory agencies restrict its use to those with clear medical need, as benefits in otherwise healthy individuals are unproven and potential side effects (e.g., edema, joint pain, insulin resistance) can be significant. In summary, somatropin can legitimately be used to treat lack of energy in documented growth hormone deficiency, but its use for general fatigue or energy enhancement in healthy people lacks robust scientific support.
