Teacrine is a brand name for theacrine, a purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine, found naturally in certain teas like Camellia assamica var. kucha. Its use for supporting or enhancing energy is primarily based on preliminary scientific studies, with limited but emerging evidence. Small-scale, short-term human trials have suggested that theacrine may promote subjective feelings of energy, improve mood, and reduce fatigue without building tolerance as rapidly as caffeine. For example, a 2016 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Taylor et al., 2016) found that Teacrine supplementation (200 mg) increased energy and reduced fatigue in healthy adults compared to placebo. However, most studies are funded by manufacturers, have small sample sizes, and are of short duration. No robust, long-term studies have established its effectiveness or safety for daily energy support. There is no significant record of traditional use for theacrine as an energy booster; its modern application is informed by its structural similarity to caffeine and preclinical research. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation supporting its use for lack of energy, the evidence is preliminary and not as strong as for established stimulants like caffeine.
