Theacrine is a purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine, primarily found in the Camellia assamica var. kucha tea plant. Its use for supporting energy and reducing fatigue has scientific validation, though the evidence base is still emerging and not as robust as for caffeine. Several small human studies have shown that theacrine supplementation (commonly as TeaCrine®) can improve subjective feelings of energy, alertness, and motivation to exercise, with effects noted both acutely and after repeated use. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Taylor et al., 2016) found that doses of 200-300 mg increased self-reported energy and reduced fatigue without causing significant habituation or tolerance over 7 days. Other studies indicate it may have less impact on blood pressure and heart rate compared to caffeine, potentially making it a preferable option for some users. However, most research to date involves small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes industry sponsorship. There are also limited data on long-term safety and efficacy. Overall, theacrine appears to have some scientific support for enhancing energy and reducing fatigue, but the quality and quantity of evidence are moderate at best. More large-scale, independent, and long-term studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for this use.
