Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asia as a tonic for energy and vitality. In recent years, modern research has begun to explore its potential scientific basis for supporting energy levels and reducing fatigue. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies suggest that tongkat ali may help improve subjective feelings of energy, reduce fatigue, and enhance physical performance. These effects are thought to be due to its influence on cortisol and testosterone regulation, as well as possible adaptogenic properties.

For example, a 2016 randomized, placebo-controlled trial found that supplementation with tongkat ali for four weeks improved mood and reduced symptoms of stress and fatigue in moderately stressed adults. Additional studies have reported improvements in endurance and reduction in perceived exertion during exercise, although the number of high-quality human trials remains limited. The mechanisms proposed include normalization of stress hormones and support of anabolic hormone balance, which may indirectly contribute to enhanced energy and reduced fatigue.

While the evidence base is growing, most studies are small and of short duration, with some relying on self-reported outcomes. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary supportive evidence for using tongkat ali to address lack of energy, more robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. Its traditional use for this purpose is now supported by moderate but not definitive scientific evidence.
