Evidence supporting the use of: Total Fat
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Total Fat refers to the sum of all types of fats present in food, including saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats. Fats are one of the three primary macronutrients, alongside carbohydrates and proteins, and they play a critical role in human energy metabolism. Scientifically, fats are a dense source of energy, providing approximately 9 kilocalories per gram, which is more than double the energy provided by carbohydrates or proteins (each providing 4 kcal/g).
When carbohydrate stores are depleted, such as during prolonged exercise or fasting, the body turns to fat as a major energy source. Dietary fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, which can be used to generate ATP, the body's primary energy currency. Several studies have demonstrated that adequate fat intake is essential for maintaining energy levels, especially in endurance athletes or individuals on low-carbohydrate diets (e.g., ketogenic diets).
While excessive fat intake has negative health implications, an appropriate amount of dietary fat is necessary for energy production, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), and overall metabolic health. Therefore, there is strong scientific validation for the role of total fat in supporting energy needs, particularly when balanced within a healthy diet. The evidence is rated 4 out of 5 due to the extensive scientific support, with the caveat that not all types of fat are equally beneficial for long-term health.
