Evidence supporting the use of: Hedyotis diffusa
For the health condition: Enteritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis diffusa, also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a longstanding history of use for various inflammatory conditions, including enteritis. In TCM, Hedyotis diffusa is believed to "clear heat" and "remove toxins," which aligns with its application in conditions characterized by inflammation and infection, such as enteritis. Historical texts and materia medica from China frequently reference its use for gastrointestinal disorders, diarrhea, and dysentery—conditions that overlap with or resemble enteritis. From a scientific perspective, some in vitro and animal studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in Hedyotis diffusa extracts. Certain compounds isolated from the plant, such as flavonoids and iridoid glycosides, have demonstrated the ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce tissue inflammation in experimental models. However, high-quality clinical trials specifically assessing its efficacy in treating enteritis in humans are lacking. Most evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal, and the mechanisms of action are not fully elucidated. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented and some preliminary pharmacological data are promising, the current level of scientific validation does not exceed preclinical studies and case reports. More rigorous clinical research is required to establish efficacy and safety for enteritis treatment.
