Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Artemisia herba-alba, commonly known as white wormwood, has a long-standing history in traditional medicine, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. It has been used to address a variety of ailments, including gastrointestinal disturbances, diabetes, and in some traditional contexts, neurological conditions like epilepsy. The rationale for its use in epilepsy is primarily based on ethnobotanical surveys; healers and traditional practitioners have cited Artemisia herba-alba as a part of herbal remedies for convulsions and seizures. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for epilepsy is limited. A few in vivo animal studies and phytochemical analyses have indicated that Artemisia species may contain compounds (such as flavonoids and essential oils) with potential neuroactive properties, but robust clinical data specific to epilepsy are lacking. No randomized controlled human trials have been published as of 2024 to validate its use for epilepsy. Therefore, while Artemisia herba-alba is used traditionally for epilepsy in some cultures, the evidence base remains weak, and its use should be considered with caution in the absence of scientific validation.
