Rating (out of 5): 2

Nardostachys jatamansi, commonly known as spikenard, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for the management of neurological disorders, including epilepsy. In Ayurveda, jatamansi is classified as a "medhya rasayana," or brain tonic, and is recommended for calming the mind, reducing convulsions, and treating hysteria and epilepsy. The root and rhizome extracts are typically used in various herbal formulations. The traditional use is based on empirical experience rather than rigorous scientific evaluation, and ancient texts frequently mention its purported anticonvulsant properties.

Modern scientific research into Nardostachys jatamansi's efficacy for epilepsy is limited but emerging. A few animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of the plant may possess anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effects, possibly through modulation of GABAergic and antioxidant pathways. However, these studies are preliminary, typically involve small sample sizes, and are not directly translatable to clinical practice. There are no large-scale human clinical trials or robust meta-analyses available to confirm its efficacy or safety for treating epilepsy in humans. Therefore, while traditional usage is well-documented, current scientific evidence remains insufficient to justify widespread clinical application.
