Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Uncaria rhynchophylla, commonly known as Gou Teng, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating neurological conditions, including epilepsy. More recently, scientific research has begun to explore its pharmacological properties in the context of epilepsy. Several preclinical studies using animal models have shown that extracts of Uncaria rhynchophylla and its active alkaloids (notably rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline) exhibit anticonvulsant effects. These effects are thought to be mediated by modulation of glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission, as well as inhibition of NMDA receptor activity and reduction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in the brain.

A few studies have indicated that the herb can reduce seizure severity and frequency in rodent models of epilepsy. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Epilepsy Research, Journal of Ethnopharmacology) has demonstrated that rhynchophylline may suppress epileptiform activity and protect neurons from excitotoxic damage. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains at the preclinical (animal or cell culture) level. Thus, while the scientific basis for the use of Uncaria rhynchophylla in epilepsy is growing, it is not yet strong or definitive, and more high-quality human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
