Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree. It has been studied for its pharmacological effects as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist. By blocking these presynaptic receptors, yohimbine leads to increased release of norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and, to a lesser extent, epinephrine (adrenaline) in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This mechanism has been investigated for its potential to enhance sympathetic nervous system activity, which is closely tied to the "fight or flight" response mediated by catecholamines like epinephrine.
Clinically, yohimbine has been used primarily for erectile dysfunction and as a mydriatic agent, but its role in supporting or enhancing the "Epinephrine body system"—that is, the physiological pathways and effects modulated by epinephrine and related catecholamines—has some scientific basis. Studies in both animals and humans have demonstrated that yohimbine can increase plasma levels of norepinephrine and, to a lesser extent, epinephrine.
