Fadogia agrestis is traditionally used in parts of Africa, particularly Nigeria, as an herbal remedy for male sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction (ED). The plant has a history of use in folk medicine to enhance libido and sexual performance. Scientific research on Fadogia agrestis is limited, especially in humans, and most available evidence comes from animal studies. Some rodent studies have indicated that extracts of Fadogia agrestis may increase serum testosterone levels and improve certain parameters related to sexual behavior, such as mounting frequency and erection quality in male rats. However, these findings are preliminary and based on animal models; there are no well-conducted clinical trials in humans to confirm efficacy or safety for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The mechanism is hypothesized to involve increased testosterone production, but this has not been clearly elucidated or validated in human subjects. Therefore, while there is a basis in traditional use and some early animal research, there is insufficient scientific validation to support its use for ED in humans at this time.
