Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Testes, often referred to as "orchic extract" or "testicular extract," have historically been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in early Western and some Asian medical practices, as a treatment for male sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction (ED). The rationale behind this use is rooted in the "doctrine of signatures" and organotherapy, the belief that consuming animal organs could help treat ailments of the corresponding human organ. Testicular extracts were thought to restore masculinity and sexual vitality by providing the body with substances found in healthy testes, such as testosterone and other androgens.
However, scientific validation for the effectiveness of testes or testicular extracts in treating ED is extremely limited. Modern clinical studies do not support the use of raw or processed testes as an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. The hormone testosterone, which plays a role in sexual function, can be administered in controlled pharmaceutical forms, but ingesting or injecting crude testes extracts is not supported by evidence and carries risks, including transmission of infections and exposure to unregulated substances. The use of testes for ED persists mainly in historical accounts and some folk practices, but it is not recognized in evidence-based modern medicine.
Overall, the traditional use is based on historical precedent rather than scientific evidence, and the support from controlled clinical research is negligible to nonexistent.
