Evidence supporting the use of: Lignans
For the body system: Estrogen
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lignans are a group of polyphenolic compounds found in plants, especially seeds (such as flaxseed), whole grains, and some vegetables. They are classified as phytoestrogens because their structure is similar to estrogen, allowing them to bind to estrogen receptors in the body and exert weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. Scientific studies suggest that lignans can modestly influence estrogen metabolism and activity. For example, research has shown that consumption of lignan-rich foods may alter urinary estrogen metabolites in ways that could reduce the risk of hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast cancer (PMID: 17585029). Some clinical trials have indicated potential benefits for menopausal symptoms and menstrual health, but results are mixed and often limited by small sample sizes and short durations.
Overall, while there is emerging scientific evidence that lignans can interact with the estrogen body system, the strength and consistency of the evidence is moderate. Lignans are not a replacement for estrogen therapy but may have a supportive role in hormonal balance when included as part of a balanced diet. Major health authorities do not yet endorse lignans as a primary intervention for estrogen-related health issues, but their use is supported by mechanistic studies and some human trials.
