Lignans are naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds found in plants, particularly seeds such as flaxseed, as well as in whole grains and some vegetables. Their structure allows them to act as phytoestrogens, meaning they can weakly mimic or modulate the action of estrogen in the body. This potential for modulating estrogenic activity is the primary reason lignans are used to support the estrogen body system. Several scientific studies have examined lignans, especially those in flaxseed (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside), for their effects on estrogen metabolism, menopausal symptoms, and hormone-related conditions such as breast cancer risk and cardiovascular health.

Evidence from clinical trials and epidemiological studies suggests that lignan-rich diets may influence estrogen metabolism, potentially leading to a more favorable balance of estrogen metabolites. This is thought to be beneficial, particularly for hormone-sensitive conditions. Some studies have shown that lignan supplementation can modestly reduce hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, although results are mixed and often dependent on the population studied and the form of lignans used. The evidence is not robust enough to support lignans as a stand-alone therapy for estrogen-related disorders, but their use as part of a balanced diet is supported by moderate scientific evidence. More research is needed to clarify optimal dosing, efficacy, and mechanisms of action.
