Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitex Agnus-Castus, also known as chaste tree or chasteberry, has a long history of traditional use to support women's hormonal health, particularly issues believed to be related to estrogen and progesterone balance. In traditional European herbal medicine, it was used to alleviate symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle, such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and irregular menstruation. The herb is not a phytoestrogen and does not directly supply estrogen; instead, it is thought to act on the pituitary gland to influence the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin, thereby indirectly affecting endogenous hormone levels.

Scientific studies have primarily investigated Vitex for PMS, mastalgia (breast pain), and some menstrual irregularities, but the evidence for direct estrogenic effects is limited. Most research suggests that Vitex may lower elevated prolactin and help rebalance progesterone and estrogen ratios, particularly in women with luteal phase defects. However, robust scientific validation specific to "supporting the Estrogen body system" is lacking, and its effects are more nuanced than merely boosting or mimicking estrogen. Therefore, its use is justified by tradition, with moderate evidence (level 3) for related hormonal support, but not as a direct source of estrogenic activity.
