Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo, often called "Huang Jing Zi" in Chinese medicine) has a long history of traditional use in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Historically, Chinese Chastetree has been used to address a variety of conditions related to women's health, including regulating menstrual cycles and alleviating symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. Its applications are somewhat analogous to those of Vitex agnus-castus (chasteberry) in European herbalism, which is more directly associated with potential effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and the regulation of reproductive hormones.

However, scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Chinese Chastetree for raising or supporting low estrogen levels is limited. Most of the available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties rather than direct endocrine effects. While traditional texts suggest its use for menstrual and menopausal symptoms—conditions often linked to low estrogen—modern clinical studies substantiating these claims for Vitex negundo are lacking. Therefore, its use for supporting estrogen is best understood as rooted in tradition, with only weak supporting evidence from scientific studies. Further research is needed to clarify its role and effectiveness in hormone regulation.
