Evidence supporting the use of: Arginine silicate
For the health condition: Exercise
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arginine silicate is a compound combining the amino acid L-arginine with silicon. Its use in exercise support is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than tradition. L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule that promotes vasodilation and may improve blood flow. Silicon is suggested to benefit connective tissue health. Several small clinical studies have investigated arginine silicate's effects on exercise performance, blood flow, and recovery. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Kalman et al. (2015) found that supplementation with arginine silicate inositol increased plasma arginine levels and nitric oxide, and improved subjective measures of muscle pump in resistance-trained men. Another study (Rutherford et al., 2017) observed improvements in perceived energy, focus, and muscle recovery among healthy adults using arginine silicate inositol.
However, these studies are limited in size and duration, and results regarding objective performance metrics such as strength, endurance, or muscle growth are mixed or preliminary. While the mechanistic rationale (increased nitric oxide and improved blood flow) is plausible and some early data are promising, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are still limited. There are no large-scale, long-term clinical trials conclusively demonstrating significant exercise performance benefits. Thus, scientific evidence exists but remains preliminary, justifying a modest evidence rating.
