Evidence supporting the use of: Creatine nitrate
For the health condition: Exercise
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Creatine nitrate is a form of creatine in which the creatine molecule is bonded to a nitrate group. It is used primarily as a dietary supplement to support exercise performance, building on the well-established benefits of creatine monohydrate. Scientific evidence for creatine monohydrate’s effectiveness in increasing muscle mass, strength, and exercise performance is strong. However, specific research on creatine nitrate is more limited. Some studies suggest that creatine nitrate can increase plasma creatine levels and may offer similar ergogenic benefits to creatine monohydrate, with potential added benefits from the nitrate group, such as improved blood flow and reduced perceived effort during high-intensity exercise.
For example, a 2016 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that creatine nitrate supplementation improved performance in repeated short-duration, high-intensity cycling sprints. Other small studies have shown improved resistance exercise performance, though the magnitude of benefits appears similar to creatine monohydrate. Safety profiles at recommended dosages are also comparable. However, there is not yet enough large-scale or long-term data to definitively conclude that creatine nitrate is superior or provides unique advantages over creatine monohydrate. Overall, the scientific evidence supports the use of creatine nitrate for exercise performance, but the evidence base is still growing and not as robust as for creatine monohydrate.
